OCEAN CITY, Md. - Saturday, July 7th, Ocean City will be holding its first strong man competition, and Gold's Gym is looking for a few good men and women, who are up for the task. Gold's Gym fitness director Gary Howard is pumped up for Saturday. Dozens from all over the country are expected to come out and participate in the beach town's first ever strong man competition.
"We have various age groups, gender groups, weight classes, from females, males, teenagers, master's, open divisions," says Howard.
"It's good, we've had teenagers, women, I've had calls from all over. I have a guy that's flying in from South Carolina, Charlotte, to be in this competition," he continues.
"So far we've got 3 guys, 55 and older getting in, and we've also got a 16-year-old who is the youngest, and we only have two girls. So girls come on we need more girls in this," Howard pleads.
This competition is not only about strength, but also includes endurance, like flipping a 300 pound tire 100 feet. It will also include four events ranging from pulling a Ford F-150 100 feet for the men. Which I had to try my hand at. To carrying 45 pound dumb bells 100 feet for the women.
With Saturday's forecast looking like another hot one, this gym has it all covered.
"We will have an EMT here. We'll have plenty of water. Plenty of Gatorade and other drinks with electrolytes," says Howard.
The competition starts at 10 AM at Gold's gym. The grand prize is a strong man champion shirt, 100 dollars cash, and of course bragging rights.
