WICOMICO Co., Md. - It's like deja vu all over again, and it's got local residents begging the question: "how many accidents must happen before there is a change."
"The fact that I use this intersection every single day, 2 to 6 times a day, we literally take our lives in our hands crossing this intersection every single day," said local resident, Ellen Bethel.
The intersection of Route 50 and White Lowe Road is deemed a danger zone. On Tuesday, an SUV and sedan collided injuring six people and a dog. Last year there were 14 crashes at the intersection. Just over a month ago, we reported 7 accidents since January, and now Maryland State Police tell us there have been a total of 10 accidents so far this year.
"You're going from a 65 mile per hour zone to a 55 mile per hour zone, traffic still tends to speed and then they're coming up on the intersection where you have traffic trying to go straight across," said Corporal Mark White of Maryland State Police, Salisbury barrack.
Last month when we spoke with the State Highway Administration, they said there hadn't been enough accidents to warrant a traffic signal.
"If traffic signals were the perfect solution for every single traffic pattern, they would be everywhere," said Gee Williams of the State Highway Administration. Even police can agree, something has got to give.
"I think with the increased traffic and the Royal Farms there, it's definitely in line for a traffic signal," said Corporal White.
The State Highway Administration has said before, if more accidents happen there, they will conduct a study. No word yet if they have changed their mind.
