Man's Best Friend Helps ECI Inmates And War Vets

Posted: Updated:

WESTOVER, Md. - It's a unique partnership aimed at helping both Vets and Inmates, and at the center of it all, dogs. Dog crates now sit in prison cells at the Eastern Correctional Institute.
It's part of a new program that has incarcerated war veterans training service dogs for disabled and wounded soldiers heading back home.

"This is an opportunity for our inmates to participate in restorative justice, in training these dogs...this program cuts down the training time almost in half, so that the dogs can be available for our servicemen," says the ECI Warden.

James Curran, A US Army vet, says the program is not only giving inmates a second chance, but it also gives he and other veterans a new lease on life.

"I rarely didn't go out in society. I had really bad social anxiety, and he just brought me back to life," says the Sergeant.

The dogs are coming to Westover through a New York non-profit, America's Vet Dogs. Lloyd Harris, one of the inmates turned dog trainers says he can't wait to get started.

"It makes me feel good to be able to give something back, especially to the disabled veterans because they fight and make a sacrifice everyday for us...I think its awesome, I think that it's going to be very successful, and I'm just looking forward to the outcome of it," says the inmate.
