SALISBURY, Md. - It's the first time in 6 years, that the skies have lit up above the city of Salisbury. An idea that's been in the works since last 4th of July, all boils down to the last 24 hours of organized chaos.
"We have food vendors from BBQ, to pop-ups, kettle corn, to crushed and snow ice for the kids, activities for the kids, music here so we're just trying to create a good family atmosphere," said coordinator Mike Dunn.
On Tuesday, the barricades, caution tape and digital street signs went up, reminding drivers of road closures and delays. Then hours before launch time, crews brought out the big guns. $20,000 worth of pyrotechnics, that will shoot up 600 feet in the air, and fizzle down over the athletic fields at Salisbury University. Several law enforcement agencies will be out in full force, awaiting any sparks of violence.
"Our agency has put out additional 10 officers in addition to our normal patrol that evening so there is going to be quite a few officers to handle the crowds," said Lt. Scott Colb, of the Salisbury Police Department.
"The community has responded in a remarkable way. It has really made this as easy as it can be," said Dunn.
Hundreds of donations poured in: some large, some small. But just like one supporter wrote "every little bit helps."
Everything kicks off at 6 p.m. Visitors can park in the parking garage on Wayne Avenue. Fireworks are expected to start around 9.
