OCEAN CITY, Md. - A controversial vote on voting. Ocean City Town Council is debating on consolidating the municipal elections with the general elections.
"There has been some talk about the same day, but separate elections in the building and in different rooms, and I'm not for that. I want a one stop shop," said Councilman Joe Hall.
He has been pushing for this change for 10 years. Advocates say the move would save some $9,000 and increase voter turnout, which has been dismal. However, Councilman Brent Ashley says the cons outweigh the pros.
"If you go to a one day election, I think the individual local candidates' attention will be much watered down," said Ashley.
As it stands, three council members oppose it while four others support it, two of which are up for re-election. The past couple of years, there was a 6-1 vote on the issue. It recently changed with what Councilman Ashley thinks may be personal interests, now that elections are coming up.
"Well that would be my personal feeling. My other three colleagues have voted against it twice in the last year," said Ashley.
If the vote is yes, the change would take effect this year. The council opened up public comment at Monday night's meeting. We will bring you the details on the final vote, as soon as it becomes available.
