BRIDGEVILE, Del. - A Delaware housing complex, struggling financially, gets just what they needed a makeover. A $3.6 million renovation project has turned Canterbury Apartments from shabby to chic. The USDA Rural Development gave the financial backing needed to offer 66 residents living in the low-income housing units a better quality of life.
"It needed a lot of work because its been here for so many years and its really wonderful now what they've done," said owner, Arthur Edwards.
Edwards also says the property has almost 30 years of wear. Now it comes equipped with energy efficient appliances, a laundry room and new cabinets. The two newest additions, however, have made Canterbury more family-friendly.
"One was the playground which was a needed item for the children that are here, and the biggest thing is the community room here," said Edwards.
"We get to play tag with our friends out here now because we got a park and all," said little Isaiah Santiago.
"We can play hide and seek, and do new things, and have fun climbing on the rock wall," said little Jade Powell.
The USDA also set aside $142,000 to keep 21 of the apartments' rent below market levels, to ensure that tenants won't have to pay more than 30 percent of their income to rent.
