
Litman LitowSALISBURY, Md. - Litman Litow, 90, of Salisbury, passed away on Friday, June 22, 2012, at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. Born in Molczadz, Poland, he was the son of the late Moshe Zev Litowarski and Devora Litowarski.
Mr. Litow was a survivor of the Holocaust who fought in the Jewish partisans in the western area of what is now Belraus. He and his first wife immigrated to the United States in April 1948. They settled in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. He was employed by Paramount Poultry, first in the company's grower operations and then later as the company's buyer. He also owned Litow Inc., raising chickens and various crops in both Maryland and Delaware. He moved to Salisbury in 1950 and immediately became active in Beth Israel Congregation, serving as its president, religious school principal, teacher and ex-officio cantor. He started the congregation's adult education program, which he ran for many years. He also was an active member of the Liebman-Berger Jewish War Veterans Post. He was a frequent contributor to letters to the editors of various newspapers. He spoke at schools and churches, primarily about his experiences in and lessons of the Holocaust. He enjoyed fishing, reading, and spending time with his extended family.
He is survived by his wife Jean M. Litow; a son, Leon Litow and his wife Helen of Burtonsville, MD; a daughter Dena Litow Hirsh and her husband Robert of Gaithersburg, MD; a step-daughter Susan Westenburger and her husband Peter of Annapolis, MD; a step-son Alan Hayes and his wife Robin Varette of Owings, MD; 10 grandchildren Matthew Litow, Daniel Litow, Zachary Hirsh, Joshua Hirsh, Amira Westenburger, Alyssa Westenburger, Gavin Westenburger, Dorothy Long, Alana Hayes and Samuel Hayes; 6 great grandchildren Aliyah Hirsh, Madison Hirsh, Elliot Schor, Delilah Schor, Olivia Long and Julia Long.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Zelda Gilerovitz Litow, 7 siblings Aran Gershon Litowarski, Hannah Litowarski, Grunia Litowarski, Shifra Litowarski, Pinchus Litowarski, Hasha Litowarski and Leah Litowarski.
A funeral service will be held today, Sunday, June 24, 2012 at 2:00pm at the Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury with a Jewish committal following at Beth Israel Cemetery in Salisbury. Rabbi Arnold Bienstock will officiate. The family will receive visitors at Beth Israel Congregation following the burial.
