NASA Launches Sounding Rocket From Va.

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTIC, Va. (AP) - NASA has successfully launched a suborbital sounding rocket carrying educational experiments from its facility on Wallops Island. The rocket was sent to an altitude of 73 miles on Thursday before crashing in the Atlantic Ocean off the Virginia coast.

The 17 experiments were designed by university instructors and students from across the country. They were developed through programs conducted with the Colorado and Virginia Space Grant Consortia.

The programs are designed to provide participants an introduction to building small experiments that can be launched on sounding rockets. The next launch from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility is scheduled for no earlier than July 20.
