Gambling workgroup set to hold last meeting

Posted: Updated:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A work group studying whether to expand gambling in Maryland is holding its last scheduled meeting.

The group of lawmakers and advisers to Gov. Martin O'Malley is set to meet Wednesday. The governor has said he will call a special session next month, if lawmakers can reach a consensus on a variety of issues.

One is whether to allow table games like blackjack. The group is also weighing whether a casino should be allowed in Prince George's County.

The group met behind closed doors on Monday. Members also are expected to meet behind closed doors on Wednesday, before the open meeting.

That prompted Republican Sen. E.J. Pipkin to criticize the group for meeting behind closed doors on an important state issue.
