PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Important life lessons are being learned at University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
"You can't get through life pleasing other people, but you have to make sure that you respect yourself," said A'briah Miles, 9th grader. "We learned how to believe in yourself and how there are ways that you can be a strong female," said Alana Briddeell, 9th grader.
Local teens are taking part in the Women of Distinction's Summer Academy. The student organization aims to make a difference in their community. "Our desire is that each of these young ladies develop into the right, happy and confident leaders of tomorrow," said Ayanna Tilghman, Program Director.
The girls participate in a number of activities throughout the week designed to teach leadership skills, conflict resolution and self-development. "I can be who I want to be, but I should also be confident with it and not only try to be who my friends want me to be," said Ahnijah Smith, 9th grader.
They also get a little insight into the college experience. "The dorms and stuff - that's really helped with what life will actually be like and what to expect," said Smith.
Leaders say it's been a huge success. "Our young ladies have been like sponges - they are excited about this experience and they're soaking up the information," said Tilghman.
