Governor's Bowl Help Va. Food Banks During Summer

Posted: Updated:

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Food donations to food banks typically decline during the summer. The Governor's Bowl challenge is aimed at helping Virginia's food banks offset that loss. The food and fund drive began May 28 and will continue through July 4. It's a joint effort by Gov. Bob McDonnell, the Virginia Chamber of Commerce and The Federation of Virginia Food Banks.

Awards will be presented to three Chamber offices and one state government office based on the total number of pounds donated. Every dollar donated will be the equivalent of 4 pounds. McDonnell says Virginia food banks have seen a 54 percent increase in demand since 2006.

Food bank federation executive director Leslie Van Horn says the summer months are the most challenging for food banks to keep their distribution centers stocked.
