SALISBURY, Md. - Since 2007 more than 1,500 calls for police service have been placed in reference to the Thrift Travel Inn. Now, Mayor Ireton is taking steps to rid the city of the troubled property.
Mayor Ireton says, "We can get this torn down, do a better job on route 13, we know exactly what we dealt with the property, the prostitution, the fire calls, the police calls for service."
Mike Nolan, a business owner across the street from Thrift Travel Inn says, "Ever since they've closed it down, I haven't been propositioned. I used to get propositioned every time I was cleaning one of the cars, some young lady would come up and propositioned me."
Gaining support for this demolition project, council members and business owners that neighbor the property are speaking out.
Councilwoman Shanie Shields says, "I support the demolition or renovation but if there's not going to be renovated it just can't sit there for years and years and years and nothing be done."
Reeven Getrouw of Reeven's Auto Shop says, "I think it's a good idea to do that because it will look a lot better for the city of Salisbury."
With it being condemned twice, and up for demolition on two separate occasions the Mayor has little patience for politics, when looking to rid the city of the controversial hotel. Mayor Ireton will submit a 60,000 dollar budget amendment to the Salisbury city council to demolish this property. But what happens next, rest in the hands of the council members.
