Gingrich Banking On Retail Politics In Delaware

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is hoping retail politics will make the inevitability of Mitt Romney's nomination a tough sell among Delaware's GOP voters. The former House speaker is seeking an upset victory in Tuesday's presidential primary. That would lend credibility to his flagging campaign and his plans to help shape the Republican Party platform at its August convention in Florida.

Gingrich has made several campaign stops in Delaware over the past few weeks, appearing at fire hall rallies, speaking to Republican gatherings and fielding questions from voters. The only other visit to Delaware by a GOP presidential candidate was a brief stop by Romney earlier this month in Wilmington, just hours after his closest rival, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, dropped out of the race.
