LAUREL, Del., - Recent criminal activity has prompted Delaware officials to make a controversial move. A rash of violence prompts an emergency curfew at the Carvel Gardens Apartments in Laurel. Meaning people who don't live there, aren't allowed on the premises from 10 PM to 6 am.
Mayor Schwed states, "I didn't make this decision lightly. But I've always operated from a principle that you have to do what you think is right."
Police say the curfew is not a punishment for tenants. But say it's in response to the recent spike in dangerous criminal activity from quote "outsiders of the community."
"Its the people that obviously come by to visit, and it turns out to be a hang out, those are the people that we're trying to target. Those are the people we're trying to eliminate being out there," quotes Sgt. Detective Calloway.
The 3 am gun shootout last week was the breaking point for the mayor. Which is why he imposed this curfew. Residents are responding by stating, "More should have been done. But I mean I guess when it came to this little incident that we had recently, now they are imposing a curfew. And also stating, "I think that they should just have it where nobody is really hanging around outside. Even the people that live here." The curfew is scheduled to end on May 7th. From that point, law officials will examine the crime numbers and determine whether to lift the curfew.
