MARYLAND - If you've got that hero gene, one Maryland organization wants to help send students with a passion for public service, get to college.
Will you be the one called on in an emergency? What about a major disaster? Or maybe you're the person who can help inform the public on what's to come, in case of catastrophe? Well the Maryland Emergency Management Association wants to help you get there.
"If a student is looking for a challenge this is it," said Fred Webster, Secretary of MEMA.
Webster sat down with WMDT to tell us about five, $1,000 scholarships, one for each region in Maryland. They're available to high school seniors to be used towards their college education.
"We're looking for somebody that's going to get into the emergency management field, directly or it could be any type of public safety," said Webster.
That includes police, fire, meteorology, disaster and corporate risk management, to name a few. Usually one student from the Eastern shore will be chosen, but there could be more.
"There were actually two winners from the Eastern shore of Maryland because some other regions had no applicants apply," he said.
The money is out there, it's up to you to take advantage of it. The deadline to apply is April 2nd. For more information about the scholarship, contact the Delmarva Education Foundation at 410-219-3336 or log click on the DEF logo.
