Brown to testify on health exchange legislation

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland's Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown is advocating for a program to provide more access to health care.

Brown will testify Wednesday before a state Senate committee in favor of legislation that builds on the state's efforts to create a Health Benefit Exchange, which is intended to help individuals and small businesses buy health insurance.

He will also testify in front of the House of Delegates Health and Government Operations Committee on Thursday.

The exchange is an element of federal healthcare reform and states must each have its own exchange in place by 2014.

The legislation builds on laws passed last year that allowed Maryland officials to begin implementing the exchange and receive federal funds.
