WMDT 47 News - A Cincinnati high school is spending $40,000 on an initiative to boost attendance. They are being rewarded with Visa gift cards just for showing up. Seniors will get $25 a week, underclassmen will get $10.
In addition, for every week a student gets a gift card, the school will deposit $5 into a savings account that the student can access upon graduation. The program has been going on for only a week and attendance is already up by 15 percent.
Kyle Mills strongly disagrees. "They shouldn't be given that kind of incentive to attend school and get an education. I don't think kids should be given gifts in order to come to school. I totally disagree with that," said Mills.
Robert Riccio says it's ridiculous. "I think it's absolutely absurd. These type of incentives I don't agree with. It's ruining the kids going to school and their general purpose. I think you're sending a bad message to the kids and to the parents for their reason to go to school in the first place," said Riccio.
