VIRGINIA- Life in Virginia begins at conception, not at birth. So declares a new "personhood" bill that passed in the Republican controlled House of Delegates. The measure would give unborn children at all stages of development the same rights available to "other persons".
Bob Marshall, the State Delegate that is proposing this bill states, "It does recognize that there's a human being before birth. But everybody really knows that." He continues by stating, "There's a separate unique genetic identity, that's different from the mother who's carrying the child."
However, opponents of the bill feel the legislation curbs women's rights to contraception.
House Minority Whip, Charniele Herring states, "The way that the bill is written defines a person as existing at the moment of conception. That means any birth control denying implementation in the uterus would be outlawed." "There are over 25,000 references to the word person, and the code. And it can have the untold consequences such as redistricting to who can drive in the HOV lane", quotes Delegate Herring.
As the bill now faces the state senate in Virginia, it is gaining support from some along the eastern shore. With some residents quoting, "I feel like everybody should have an opportunity at life and should have a opportunity to live like their parents did", "Life starts at conception, and the bible says nothing about abortion," and some just simply stating, "Abortion is not the way to go, just take responsibility in what you do."
