Vacant Lot
Raised Bed Garden
In 2011, it was just an overgrown, weedy vacant lot about 100' x 200'. It had previously been a lumber storage site for Moore's Lumber Yard and stones and gravel had been used liberally to stabilize the surface and promote drainage. One Friday morning, when WMDT General Manager Kathleen McLain was delivering a regular food donation from the Rotary Club of Salisbury, she struck up a conversation with Lester and Donna about gardening. She asked about the lot and if they had ever thought about developing a garden on site. Lester took her down and showed her the three row, single bed of vegetables that they had planted in a raised bed made from recycled materials. Kathleen asked them if they would be interested in having help developing a garden.
Following up on their enthusiasm, Kathleen met with Celeste Savage, Executive Director of HALO Ministries. Celeste, while not a gardener herself, loved the idea. Kathleen began talking the idea up and pulled together a dozen local folks who shared their enthusiasm. The original team was comprised of leaders from Salisbury University, area farmers/gardeners, The Wicomico County Extension Service, The Rotary Club of Salisbury and the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore.
