REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- For most charities, you give your time, or money to help. However, hundreds gave away their comfort and maybe a bit of their sanity for the Rehoboth Beach Polar Bear Plunge. Plungers have stated, you don't think about it, you just do it. You go down to the countdown and you just do it, and when its done its done."
It was a balmy 42 degrees in Rehoboth. However, thousands didn't let the cold temperatures stop them from hitting the beach and taking the plunge.
Plungers have described the water as, like a bunch of needles hitting you its just like a thousand needles going through you.
Jon Buzby, the director of media relations states, "People come back year after year. They believe in the cause, and they understand what the mission is of the special Olympics and they believe that this is a great way to give back to the community.
And Sunday's plunge will be giving back a lot more this year. Breaking the previous record as 3,685 "polar bears" took an icy dip into the Atlantic Ocean, raising over $650,000.
By the way, the plunge has been going on for 21 years.
