WENONA, Md. - Marquis Lupton reports that many of the Police and Fire departments have called their crews off of the scene of the reported downed plane off of Deal Island in the Tangier Sound. Officials say that evidence off the crash have been negative up to this point. There is still no confirmation if there was in fact a plane crash in Wenona Saturday evening. Officials remained on the scene overnight. The US Coast Guard have since launched helicopters to assist in the search. All other agencies will returned to assist Sunday morning.
This all started a little after 5:00 PM Saturday evening, when concerned residents called authorities, reporting sounds of a loud engine and what they believed to be a crash in the water. The Somerset County Fire Department, the Maryland Natural Resource police, and the US Coast Guard, Salisbury Fire had boats in the water searching. Some good samaritan vessels also headed out on the water looking for wreckage. The Coast Guard command center stationed in Wenona is reportedly checking in once every hour with the FAA, to see if there are any reports of overdue aircraft. The US Aircraft had hoped to get a helicopter out there Saturday night, but we're told because of the weather, icing dangers and a low cloud ceiling, those plans were canceled.
