SALISBURY, Md.- Barbara Z. Nelson 78, of Salisbury departed this life on December 22, 2011 surrounded by her loving family members. Barbara was born June 16, 1933 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to the late Alyz and Robert Zimmerman. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Affectionately known as "Nomie" to her granddaughters. She attended public schools in South Dakota and Kansas. After high school she attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls South Dakota. She was a school teacher for a few years and a very busy mother and wife as the family began their journey across the country. The family left South Dakota and moved to Iowa, Nebraska, Arkansas, Tennessee and then finally to Salisbury. In 1972, Barbara worked for a card and gift shop known as Te Jays. In 1978, the family purchased the store, changed the name to Barb's Gift and Hallmark shop and the legend began. Eventually two stores were purchased and Barbara along with the family worked very hard to make the stores successful. The stores were sold in 2008, however they are still known today as Barb's Gift and Hallmark.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years Jack; daughter, Jenny Hastings and her husband, Edward and daughter, Nancy Stephens and her husband, Doug; granddaughter, Nicole Hastings and companion, Jeremy Ryan and granddaughter, Amanda Leonard Bryan and her husband, Will; brothers, Robert Zimmerman and his wife, Connie and Gary Zimmerman and his wife, Cory both from Arizona. Barbara was an active member of P.E.O., a philanthropic organization promoting educational opportunities for women for 45 years. She was involved in chapters in Iowa, Nebraska and Maryland. She served many offices in these chapters. In 1975, she helped organize the Salisbury chapter and served as the president in that chapter twice. Barbara and her family enjoyed vacationing in the Cayman Islands and became great ambassadors to anyone wishing to travel there. Several residents of the island have traveled to Maryland to visit Barbara and the family.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 11:00 am at Holloway Funeral Home. A visitation will be held on Monday, December 26, 2011 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Tuesday one hour prior to the service. Officiating will be the Rev. William Kniceley.
