SALISBURY, Md. - Last night, at Salisbury University, the Assateague Coastal Trust and the Assateague Coast Keepers hosted the showing of a controversial documentary, "Food, Inc." And it was a full house.
Carole Morison, a former Perdue grower, who actually spoke out in the film about working for the poultry giant, came out to the event to answer questions. "Well, the industry wasn't happy about the movie, obviously," Morison admits. "It's not been a happy ride locally. This is the first time the movie has been shown on the lower shore." Now Morison, is an independent grower of organic, cage free hens. "A lot of people don't pay attention about where their food comes from, how it's raised, how it's processed," says Morison. "The movie just really puts it out there to make people think."
Kathy Phillips, Executive Director of the Assateague Coastal Trust and the Assateague Coast Keepers, agrees with Morrison,"I'm hoping that people watching Food Inc. will learn more about where their food comes from and what the impacts are from industrial agriculture."
WMDT attempted to contact Perdue about this story, but officials could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.
