Gas Prices Expected To Rise In Time For Thanksgiving Travel

Posted: Updated:

WMDT 4 NEWS - The holiday countdown is on. Thanksgiving is just three weeks away. It's the day known for stuffing, and of course turkey, but before you sit down to eat you may be shelling out more this year to get there. The price of gas is likely to climb and is on track to be much higher than last year. "I think it's terrible because we're already just trying to get over this recession," said Brigette Wilson, who spends about $150 a month on gas.

The hike is expected to come during one of the busiest times of the year on the roads. According to AAA, gas prices could average about $3.40 a gallon through the holiday. That's more than $.50 higher from a year ago, but this projection is not going to keep Wilson from eating turkey at home. "I still have to go see my family.  It's the holidays, a lot of people are going to go regardless."

Jim Meagher feels the same way, and he's planning a seven hour drive to upstate New York for the holiday. "We're going to see family - my wife's sister and her father and some other relatives that way," he said.  "Until the prices really climb we'll keep on traveling."

Higher prices don't seem to be a deal-breaker right now, but the total impact on holiday travel still remains to be seen. AAA is expected to release its annual Thanksgiving travel forecast on November 15th.
