GEORGETOWN, Del. - The U-S Postal service is facing a multi-billion dollar deficit and citizens are fighting a proposed fix which calls for reducing services, closing some post offices and cutting jobs.
As politicians emphasize the need to create new American jobs, Kent & Sussex County Coordinator Robert Stickels notes the importance of also maintaining jobs. At a rally in Georgetown on Tuesday, Stickels also commented on the importance of the USPS maintaining Saturday services. "A lot of businesses are still dependent on Saturday deliveries and it's really an American tradition for home deliveries on Saturday," he says.
Delaware congressman John Carney has co-sponsored a bill which would reverse a 2006 law many believe is the cause for financial problems. The law requires the USPS to pre-fund 75 years of retirement for current and future works. If the law were reversed, Carney and supporters are confident the postal service can regain financial stability.
