Be a Master Gardener!

Posted: Updated:

Salisbury, MD. Have you ever wondered why some folks' gardens seem to thrive while others languish? Ever wonder how some folks always seem to know where to go for practical information when a gardening problem crops up? Or how to tell when it really is a problem versus being simply an annoying situation, thank you very much, Mother Nature?

The most likely answer is that they are Master Gardeners. Becoming a Master Gardener and having access to that same practical knowledge is not as difficult as you may think.

This Fall, the Master Gardener Program will be taught at the University Of Maryland Wicomico Extension office located at 28647 Old Quantico Road in Salisbury. The series of classes (9AM to noon unless otherwise noted) begin this Saturday, 10, September and are every Saturday through 19 November. The timing is perfect because the classes begin after the height of the gardening season is over and finish up before we really get into the holidays. If you play your cards right, it will also get you out of the dreaded leaf raking chores.

The best news is that the classes are modestly priced at $160.00 for the series and include a Master Gardener Manual (absolutely worth the price of admission) and a binder with all the fact sheets available from the University of Maryland and the Home and Garden Information Center.

Classes include:

10 September: Introduction to Master Gardener Volunteer Training

17 September: Basic Botany & Composting 24 September: Soils, Fertilizer and Water

1 October: Baywise; Weed Identification and Controls

8 October: Bees as Pollinators; Native Perennial Plants

15 October: Greatest Green Lawns Ever!

22 October: Growing Great Gardens and the Romantic Roses 29 October: Herbs for Food; Herbs Used in Alternative Healing; 1-4PM = Integrated Pest Management

5 November: Plant Diseases and What To Do About Them; 1-3PM = Pruning Plants the Right Way

12 November: Ecology of Plants

19 November: Master Gardener Open Book Final Exam

If this isn't enough to entice you, give Ginny Rosenkranz a call at 410.749.6141 X 106 and ask her whatever questions come to mind. Be sure to tell her that the Gardening Grannies sent you! If this is all you need to know, make arrangements to get your check for $160 made out to the Wicomico EAC to them in time to start.

Get ready to learn a lot and make a whole bunch of new like-minded friends. The Gardening Grannies are a group of avid and Master Gardeners who live, love and garden on the Delmarva Peninsula. You can contact them at gardeninggrannies@wmdt.com.
