About 500,000 customers in mid-Atlantic lack power

Posted: Updated:

BALTIMORE (AP) - Utility companies say about half a million homes and businesses in the mid-Atlantic region are without electricity due to Hurricane Irene's high winds.

The outages early Monday are spread across northern Virginia, the Delmarva Peninsula and central and southern Maryland.

Baltimore Gas and Electric was reporting about 377,160 customers in the dark early Monday. Pepco, which covers Washington and its Maryland suburbs, was reporting 77,770 customers without power, including about 19,325 in the District of Columbia.

Delmarva Power is reporting about 39,830 customers without power.

Dominion Power says more than 16,820 customers in northern Virginia don't have electricity.

Constellation Energy says 1 of 2 reactors at its Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant automatically shut down.

The outages knocked out traffic lights throughout the region, causing confusion at intersections.
