OCEAN CITY, Md. - On Wednesday, storms over Ocean City sent a bolt of fear across the beach.
"All of a sudden a big flash of lightning just covered the whole beach. I've never seen anything like it before," said Ilene Schwartz, who witnessed the lightning.
Sparks went flying after lightning struck a lifeguard stand on 127th street. The wood is now split and burn marks show the point of impact. The Beach Patrol keeps a close eye on storms near the beach, and says this is a perfect example of how important it is to leave during a storm.
"This will be the 11th lightning strike I've been involved with in Ocean City since I've been here, and in every case its been on the beach. The beach is the worst place to be during lightning and as soon as there is any sign of it and we know it's coming, we tell people they need to leave the beach quickly," said Beach Patrol Captain Butch Arbin.
Luckily, no one was near the lifeguard stand during this incident. But officials warn, pay attention to the beach patrol because storms are expected again Friday.
