Seagull Madness kicks off SU basketball

Seagull Madness 11-07-17

SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury basketball fans got a first look at the SU men's and women's teams Tuesday night for Seagull Madness.

Students and community members packed the gym for the first sights of this year's squads.

"We want to get the students involved, want to get the community involved," says men's head coach Andy Sachs. "I think we put a pretty good product on the floor; we've been to the NCAA Tournament the last three years. It's a good way to showcase both teams, the men and the women."

The women are coming off a 13-13 year, but return a lot of experience. Graduating only one senior in Lauren Rothfeld, they bring in only two freshman and return four of their top five scorers from last year.

The men are looking to continue their dominance after a 20-8 campaign and a tournament berth. This year, they're young, losing four seniors who were some of the top players in program history. They'll be led by senior forward Chad Barcikowski, and a strong grouping of underclassmen.

"The past two years, I'm not going to lie to you, I thought long-term was getting to the tournament, get as far as we can. I think this year, we should break it down with the group of guys we have," said Barcikowski. "I think the first step should be to win the regular season, second step CAC championship, third step to get to the tournament and fourth step, go as far as we can, run with it and see what we can do. But we have a good group of guys so we'll see what we can do."

The women open up their season on Wednesday, November 15th at 5:00 p.m. at Virginia Wesleyan and the men open up at home on the 15th against Washington College with tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
