Talbot County teacher named Maryland Teacher of the Year finalist

TALBOT COUNTY, Md. - Officials say that a Talbot County teacher has been named a finalist for Maryland Teacher of the Year on Thursday.

Talbot County Public Schools posted on their Facebook page that it was an exciting morning at Tilghman Elementary School after School Superintendent Dr. Griffith and Mr. Redman along with Board of Education members Sandy Kleppinger and Susie Hayward made a surprise visit.

The visit was to share "wonderful news that our own Talbot Teacher of the Year Mrs. Katie Fox is a Maryland Teacher of the Year Finalist."

According to County Public Schools, Fox teaches kindergarten at Tilghman Elementary.  She received her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from the University of Michigan, an Early Childhood Teacher Education Certification from the University of Puget Sound, and a Masters in Education. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in reading from Grand Canyon University.

According to Maryland Public Schools, "The Maryland Teacher of the Year Program, an affiliate of the National Teacher of the Year Program puts the spotlight on outstanding teachers and the importance of the Teaching Profession. Maryland rewards Teachers of the Year with numerous awards.

The Maryland Teacher of the Year receives monetary awards and extraordinary gifts including a gift, from the Maryland Automobile Dealers' Association, of a new car. The school of the Maryland Teacher of the Year also receives a $10,000 cash award from McDonald's Family Restaurants of Maryland. All 24 district Teachers of the Year meet regularly with the State Superintendent to advise her about policy and reform efforts."

This year's Maryland Teacher of the Year will be announced in October.
