Salisbury man prepares for American...

Salisbury, MD - American Idol auditions in Maryland are just a few days away.

The tour bus is scheduled to be in Annapolis Tuesday, and folks in Delmarva are gearing up to go.

For Salisbury local, Kevin Andrews, this audition is a second chance.

Andrews said, “Well I actually tried out two years ago. I wanted to go back, they gave me good criticism. It didn’t really push me away, but it made me want to do it even more, and I’ve been watching it since I was a child.”

Andrews grew up singing at his local church, and he said this is where his love of singing was born.

“I did my first solo when I was 14 in church, and I did my first solo in school for a variety show in the 10th grade, and then from there, I wouldn’t shut up,” Andrews said.

Andrews said for him, singing is an escape. “Free, I can express myself better in soul than I can through talking. It helps me cope with life I guess, it really does. It’s great.”

He had a bit of a rocky start to his adult life. He said, “I was in high school. I had my first child at 18. I went to college for a year, uh, I didn’t finish because I couldn’t put my finger on what I wanted to do with my life.”

Andrews said he’s always had a deep love for other people, so he is now a certified nursing assistant at a nursing home. He said, “I help change them, assist them, feed them. All of that.”

Deep down, however, Andrews said he’s always known that he wants to sing.

He said getting onto the national singing competition would be a dream come true. “Change my life, it would change my life,” he said.

Andrews said he wants to make it onto American Idol so he can set an example for his 8-year-old son. He said, “He wants to be a pilot, so I’m trying, and he knows I want to sing, so I want to show him that I can sing, and you can be a pilot as well.”

47ABC put Andrews to the test, and it turns out, he really can sing!

He said, “You know, look out for me. Look out for me, I’m trying my best to make it. Hopefully y’all see me again.”

If you’re making it out to those American Idol auditions next week, 47ABC’s Julian Sadur will be there live.
