CAMBRIDGE, Md. - A man is facing multiple charges including two counts of attempted first-degree murder, after police say he shot at officers while on patrol, in Cambridge.
Maryland State Police say on Monday, they arrested 46-year-old William Manokey, of Cambridge, in connection to a shooting that happened this past December. According to the report, two officers from the Cambridge Police Department were on a crime reduction patrol in an area of the city where where thefts from vehicles were happening. Police say the officers were traveling in the area of Race Street and Goldsborough Avenue, when they noticed Manokey walking along the street.
At that point, the officers report that they drove towards Manokey, and he then reached into his waistband. Authorities say before the officer could stop their vehicle, the 46-year-old pulled a large caliber handgun and is believed to have fired once at the officers.
Cambridge PD says one of the officers got out of the vehicle and fire what is believed to be once at the suspect, who ran away. The officer then ran after the suspect, but was unable to catch him.
Manokey is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree attempted murder, two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, concealment of a dangerous weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon with intent to injure, and possession of a handgun and the use of a firearm in a felony violent crime.
This police-involved shooting remains under investigation by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit at the request of the Cambridge Police Department.State Police Forensic Sciences Division crime scene technicians conducted a search and processed the extensive scene for evidence. Investigators recovered a handgun and other items believed to have been discarded by the suspect as he fled.
Manokey is currently being held at the Dorchester County Detention Center.
