ANGOLA CREST, Del. - Delaware investigators are trying to identify a cause of a fire that claimed a life early Thursday morning.
Officials say the fire started just after midnight at a mobile home on Lawrence Lane.
“It was big. I mean, it was when I came out here. The whole front there, flames were just coming out of the windows,” said Dave Blunt, a resident in the Lawrence Lane neighborhood. “There was heavy fire. Heavy fire coming out of the front of the house and out of the side. You know? It already burned through the side walls on both sides and in the front of the house.”
Neighbors said they made desperate attempts to get in the home and help the woman they believed was inside, but the fire was too strong.
“Everybody was out. Everybody was trying to help. Everybody was trying to do whatever they could, you know? It was a community that came together,” Blunt said.
Though fire crews were quick to respond, the blaze had already spread through a large portion of the home.
Their worst fears were confirmed during a search of the home, a woman’s body was found in a back bedroom.
It’s a big loss, rocking the small community.
“She was a nice lady. She was very nice and all the neighbors knew her,” Blunt said.
Fire damages are estimated to be around $30,000.
The victim of the fire has been transported to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science for an autopsy.
Investigators are hard at work to determine the fire’s origin and cause.
