SEAFORD, Del. - A man is in custody, after police say he was involved in a hit and run incident and a vehicle theft that happened in Delaware.
The Seaford Police Department says on January 9, they investigated a hit and run incident in which a vehicle parked in a driveway was hit. Police say the suspect vehicle was later located and found to be stolen out of North Carolina. Authorities report that the suspect was later identified as 38-year-old William Witherspoon, of Seaford, and a warrant was obtained for his arrest.
According to the report, on Tuesday, police took a report of a motor vehicle theft where a woman attempted to confront the suspect as he was driving away in her vehicle. At that point, officers say the victim was injured as her foot was run over by the vehicle. Officers say Witherspoon was identified as the suspect in this incident based on the victim's description and other investigative measures.
On Wednesday, Seaford PD reports that the stolen vehicle from Tuesday's incident was located by the Georgetown Police Department with Witherspoon driving the vehicle.
The 38-year-old was apparently turned over to the Seaford Police Department and arrested for the hit and run accident that happened on January 9. He was also charged for Tuesday's motor vehicle theft.
Witherspoon was charged with receiving stolen property valued over $1,500 (felony), malicious mischief by a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, fail to provide information at an accident, failure to have required insurance, Failure to have registration card, driving while suspended or revoked, failure to stop at a stop sign, failure to drive at appropriate speed, theft of a motor vehicle (felony), vehicular assault in the second degree, and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony (vehicle).
He was turned over to the Department of Correction on $8,004 secured bail pending a preliminary hearing at a later date.
