Police: Couple detains Wilmington man who broke into Hartly home

HARTLY, Del. - Police say that a suspect was arrested in connection with a home burglary that happened in Hartly, on Sunday morning.

According to Delaware State Police, on Sunday at 6:05 a.m., troopers responded to a home in the 1200 block of Crystal Road, for a burglary in progress complaint. Upon arrival, troopers met with a 33-year-old man and his 29-year-old girlfriend.

The 33-year-old victim was able to detain the suspect, who had reportedly just broken into his home, while waiting for the arrival of State Police. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Jeffrey Smith of Wilmington, was immediately taken into custody without incident.

Investigators say that Smith forced entry into the home, through a rear sliding glass door. Once inside, he was reportedly discovered by the 29-year-old woman walking around in the living room, at which point police were immediately contacted.

Both the victims said that they did not know Smith and had no connections to him. Neither of the victims or Smith were injured as a result of the incident. Smith was taken to Troop three where he was charged with second degree burglary and criminal mischief.

Smith also had six active warrants on unrelated charges. Smith was arraigned out of Justice of the Peace Court Seven and committed to the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center on $7,750 secured bond.
