Pedestrian fatally struck by car in Frederica

FREDERICA, Del. - The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal car accident involving a pedestrian.

The accident happened at approximately 12:07 a.m. on Saturday on Bay Road, just north of South Frederica Road.

A 2004 Nissan Altima being driven by a 33-year-old Milford man was traveling southbound down Bay Road in the right hand lane approaching South Frederica Road.

At the same time, a 54-year-old Milford woman was running in a north-easterly direction across the southbound lanes of Bay Road, entering directly into the path of the Nissan.

The driver saw the pedestrian and swerved in an attempt to avoid striking her, but he was unable to do so.

The victim was struck by the front right bumper of the Nissan and thrown into the southbound left lane, where she was then struck by a tractor trailer, which continued driving without stopping.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Nissan was wearing his seatbelt and was uninjured as a result of the crash.
Police say the victim was wearing all dark clothing, none of which was reflective, and was not carrying a light. Alcohol is being considered as a factor on her behalf.

The name of the victim is being withheld until her family is notified.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing it's investigation into the crash. Further details will be released as they become available.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Master Corporal J. Lane at 302-698-8457.
