FENWICK ISLAND, Del. - Delaware State Police continue to investigate a fatal crash, after they say a 24-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle Thursday night, in Fenwick Island.
Officials say the incident happened around 11:00 PM, when a 50-year-old Fenwick Island man was driving a 2003 Ford pickup headed southbound on Coastal Highway while approaching South Croppers Circle in the right lane.
Police say the 24-year-old male victim, of Suffolk, VA, was with a group of subjects and vehicles that were parked on the southbound shoulder of the Coastal Highway, just south of South Croppers Circle. He was reportedly standing on the right edge of the right travel lane directly in the path of the truck. As a result, the front right of the pickup struck the pedestrian, throwing him onto the southbound shoulder. After the impact, the Ford truck continued driving for approximately one mile before stopping in the Sunrise Shopping Plaza in Fenwick Island.
The 24-year-old male was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The 50-year-old pickup truck operator was uninjured in the collision, but was transported to an area hospital for an undetermined medical condition.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident and no charges have been filed at this time.
It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor on behalf of the truck driver or the pedestrian.
Southbound Coastal Highway at South Croppers Circle was closed for approximately four and a half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
Delaware State Police are investigating the cause to a possible fatal accident.
According to D.S.P Troop 7, officials received a call at 11:05 p.m. Thursday night, to a reported incident on Coastal Highway in the area of Ocean Park Lane, Fenwick Island.
It is unclear at this time if the incident was a crash or medical emergency.
Police were still on the scene at 1:19 a.m Friday morning.

Tonight police are investigating a fatal crash in Delaware involving a 24-year-old pedestrian.
The accident occurred this evening at Fenwick Island State Park around Route 1.
It is unclear at the moment whether the pedestrian was hit on the beach or on the highway.
Delaware State Police in Bethany Beach as well as Ocean City Police responded to scene.
