RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli
says he remains hopeful that Arizona's strict new immigration law
will survive, despite a setback in federal court.
Cuccinelli was one of nine state attorneys general who filed a
friend-of-the-court brief supporting the law.
A federal judge in Arizona on Wednesday blocked the law's most
substantive provisions, including requirements that immigrants
carry their papers at all times and that police check a person's
immigration status while enforcing other laws. Some minor
provisions were allowed to stand.
Cuccinelli says he's pleased the entire statute wasn't enjoined,
but disappointed that some parts were. He noted that the ruling is
preliminary and is not a final decision on the merits.
